Canvas vs Fine Art Paper: Which Is Better for Your Portrait?
Compare canvas and fine art paper for a custom portrait: texture, frames, sizes and total display cost, with current Amber Portraits options and US prices.

In this guide
Choose canvas if you want a woven surface, depth on the wall and an optional outer frame. Choose fine art paper if you prefer a flat, matte print and want to select your own frame. The better choice depends on how you want to display the portrait and the total cost of getting it onto the wall.
At Amber Portraits, both formats are printed from digitally created oil-style artwork, and both include a watermark-free digital file. You can preview the portrait before choosing either finish.
Canvas vs fine art paper at a glance
The main differences are the surface, structure and framing. At Amber Portraits, canvas is fabric stretched over an internal wooden support; our fine art paper is available as a flat, unframed print or assembled in a wood frame with clear protective glazing.
| Detail | Amber Portraits canvas | Amber Portraits fine art paper |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Woven canvas with a visible material texture. | Flat, matte paper. |
| Structure | Stretched over an inner wooden frame, including when ordered “Unframed”. | A paper print with no stretcher or outer frame. |
| Outer frame | Optional black, natural wood or dark wood floating frame. | Optional black, white, natural wood or dark wood frame, assembled with clear protective glazing and no mat. |
| Hanging | A hanging kit is included. | Plan your own framing and hanging arrangement. |
| Digital artwork | Watermark-free JPEG included. | Watermark-free JPEG included. |
| A useful choice when | You want the depth and fabric surface of a stretched canvas. | You want to choose your own frame, border and protective glass or acrylic. |
These are Amber Portraits' options, checked on 3 November 2026 against our formats and pricing. Other print sellers may offer different paper, framing and mounting choices.

Use the viewer to compare the same artwork as canvas, fine art paper and a digital file. For canvas, you can switch between unframed, black, natural wood and dark wood. Paper also offers a white frame. It is an illustrative preview; screen colours, wood grain and material appearance can differ from the finished print.
What does canvas add to an oil-style portrait?
Canvas adds a woven surface and the depth of a stretched print. The oil-style brushwork is part of the printed image; the canvas does not add layers of hand-applied oil paint.
Our printing partner's canvas specifications put the distinction clearly: “Canvas substrate has a natural texture to it”. Our printing partner specifies a coated cotton–polyester fabric and pine or poplar outer frames. The fabric's weave and the artwork's painted appearance are two different sources of texture.
Canvas is worth considering if you like a piece that projects from the wall and can be displayed without an outer frame. Look at the portrait's faces, fur or architectural details first, then decide whether you enjoy the woven surface around them.
Does unframed canvas still have a wooden frame?
Yes. At Amber Portraits, “Unframed” canvas is already stretched over an internal wooden support. Choosing black, natural wood or dark wood adds an outer floating frame around that stretched canvas.
Your artwork continues around the sides of the canvas, and a hanging kit is included with both framed and unframed canvas. Wood grain, finish and depth can vary by product and region. The interactive detail viewer below is the same illustrative canvas presentation used on our Create pages.

When is fine art paper a better choice?
Fine art paper is a useful choice when you want a flat, matte portrait and control over its framing. You can choose a frame and a mat (the border around a print) that suit the room or fit alongside artwork you already own.
Amber Portraits' paper option uses 200 gsm enhanced, uncoated paper and is available unframed or framed. Our printing partner describes its fine art paper as enhanced matte paper. The framed option arrives assembled with clear protective glazing, ready to hang, without a mat. The wood frame overlaps the paper edge slightly. The unframed option lets you choose your own frame, mat and glazing separately. Both include the digital artwork.

If you already have a frame, check the size of print it accepts and the opening in any mat. A mat can cover the edges of the image, so think about the space around a person's head, a pet's ears or the roofline of a house. Ask your framer to check the fit before buying a frame for a specific portrait.
For a gift, paper can suit someone who enjoys choosing their own framing. If you want to give a piece with its display hardware included, compare it with the canvas options instead. Our anniversary portrait guide explains how to plan the artwork and format around the recipient.
How much do canvas and paper portraits cost?
For delivery to the United States, Amber Portraits' fine art paper starts at $59 USD and unframed canvas at $89 USD for a 12 × 16 inch portrait. A black, natural wood or dark wood canvas frame adds $50 USD at each listed size.
| Portrait print size | Fine art paper, unframed | Fine art paper, framed | Canvas, no outer frame | Canvas, framed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 16 inches | $59 USD | $99 USD | $89 USD | $139 USD |
| 18 × 24 inches | $79 USD | $129 USD | $139 USD | $189 USD |
| 24 × 32 inches | $99 USD | $159 USD | $239 USD | $289 USD |
US prices checked on 3 November 2026 against our price guide. Physical orders include shipping and a digital artwork file. Applicable taxes are added at checkout. Prices, available sizes and frame options depend on the destination; check your chosen country before ordering.
The listed dimensions describe the artwork face. Landscape portraits use the dimensions rotated, and an outer frame increases the overall size. If the portrait must fit a particular space, confirm the full dimensions before choosing a framed print.
Our portrait print size guide compares the sizes and explains how to measure the space for the finished piece.
Unframed paper has a lower print price in this comparison, but a separate frame, mat and glazing have their own costs. You can also compare our framed paper prices directly with framed canvas. If you already have a suitable frame, paper may be the more practical option.
For the 12 × 16 inch US option, the gap between the $139 framed canvas and the $59 paper print is $80 ($139 − $59). Compare that $80 with your own quote for a frame, mat, glazing and any related delivery charges. A lower framing total makes the paper option less expensive on this before-tax basis.
Will the colours and likeness look the same on both materials?
Both formats use the portrait you choose at checkout, but the surface can affect how you perceive the image. Expect some difference between a lit screen and a physical print; the on-screen viewer cannot establish an exact colour match for either material.
Check the expression, pet markings and composition in the artwork before selecting the finish. High-resolution preparation can change fine details; our team checks physical orders before printing. If the delivered artwork is materially different from the version you approved, contact us for help. The preview-to-delivery guide explains the preparation and review process.

How should you display a paper portrait?
Choose a location away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or damp, and consider protective framing for a paper print. Display conditions are part of the decision when you compare materials.
The Canadian Conservation Institute's care guidance for works of art on paper explains that light can fade colours and that changing humidity can distort paper. It recommends avoiding sunlight and considering UV-filtering glazing. A local framer can help choose suitable materials for your print.
Amber's physical prints have a limited lifetime warranty against fading, peeling and warping during normal indoor use, subject to the terms. The warranty does not make either format suitable for every environment or establish a universal lifespan for the print.
Common questions about canvas and fine art paper
Is a canvas portrait an original oil painting?
No. Amber Portraits creates artwork digitally in an oil-painting style. A canvas order is a print on woven fabric, and a fine art paper order is a print on paper. Neither is a hand-painted oil original.
Do I need to buy the digital file as well as the print?
No. Both canvas and fine art paper orders include a high-resolution, watermark-free JPEG of your chosen portrait. We prepare the file after payment and email you when it is ready to download. Check the downloaded file's actual pixel dimensions before arranging printing elsewhere; see the file and format details.
Can I buy only the digital portrait and arrange my own printing?
Yes. Choose a digital-only order if you want to arrange printing yourself. Check the finished file's pixel dimensions with your printer for the size, crop and material you want. A digital-only order does not include a physical print or frame.
Use the digital portrait printing guide for the resolution calculation and the questions to ask a print shop.
Choose the finish after you see your portrait
Start with a portrait you like, then choose how to display it. Canvas gives you a stretched fabric print with optional framing; fine art paper lets you choose your own frame around a matte print.
